What is the standard for obesity?
Regarding this question, everyone’s answer must be different! After all, everyone’s aesthetics and standards for obesity are different. Do you think you are fat just because you think you are fat? Or is everyone laughing at you because you are fat?
Is there a public standard for obesity?
Actually there is
From a medical point of view, obesity belongs to "metabolic syndrome". However, there are different definitions of obesity based on different indicators.
The initial easy way to judge is waist circumference, BMI (body mass index), waist-to-hip ratio and body fat rate.
Waist circumference, BMI and waist-to-hip ratio can be known through simple measurements and conversions, while body fat percentage needs to be measured with specialized instruments.
Waist circumference: Men ≧90cm (35 inches), women ≧80cm (31 inches)
BMI: Adults ≧24 are overweight, ≧27 are mildly obese, >30 are moderately obese, and above 35 are severely obese.
Waist-to-hip ratio (hip/waist): Men ≧0.9, women ≧0.85
Body fat: men ≧ 25, women ≧ 30
Further physiological indicators will be used to judge obesity status based on blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol:
Blood pressure: systolic blood pressure ≧130mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≧85mmHg.
Blood sugar: Fasting blood sugar value ≧100mg/dL.
Triglycerides: ≧150mg/dL.
High-density lipoprotein cholesterol is low: <40 mg/dL for men and <50 mg/dL for women.
